  • The Catholic Church in Germany felt compelled to adopt a clear stand on National Socialism in 1930-31 as that movement grew rapidly in popularity. The Diocese of Mainz took the lead with a sweeping declaration on Sep 30, 1930, that no Catholic could join the Nazi Party. Eugenio Pacelli's (Pius XII from 1939-1958) exceedingly cautious successor as nuncio in Berlin, Cesare Orsenigo, initially condemned this declaration in his report to Rome, arguing that it might still be possible to persuade the Nazis to adopt a respectful attitude toward Christianity. Here, Patch looks at the Vatican's relations with the Third Reich under Pius XI. He also discusses the interaction between the Vatican and German Catholics, and the long-term strategy for combating Communism that preoccupied Vatican officials from the late 1920s through the 1950s.
