The tribological properties of piston ring-cylinder bore assemblies are strongly influenced by the use of alcohol fuels. The presence of alcohol causes changes in the material surface properties which result in increased wear of the interacting surfaces. In order to identify the mechanisms which are responsible for the increased wear when using alcohol-based fuels, cylinder bore surfaces and surfaces subjected to model experiments were analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
A clear difference in the activity of the additives in the lubricant was observed between engines run on alcohol and those run on diesel. The adverse effect of alcohol on the lubricating system was confirmed by the model experiments.
