A Galerkin finite‐element model is developed to solve axisymmetric flow problems in confined aquifers subjected to pumping by a single well. The model can be used to analyze axisymmetric problems involving pumping from multiaquifer systems by wells which are partially screened, fully screened, or have multiple screens. A simplified boundary condition at the well bore produces results that match analytical solutions. The location of the zero‐drawdown boundary is determined by using the concept of effective radius of influence. This concept is also used to generate a mesh that automatically expands radially in time. The expanding mesh feature may lead to savings in computational time since it uses relatively few elements and nodes for simulations at small times and progressively adds elements and nodes to the mesh for simulations at higher times.
