Reports an interview with Alexandra Aikhenvald, associate director of the Research Center for Linguistic Typology, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, about her research into rare languages which are on the verge of extinction. Focuses on her work with Tariana, a dying language spoken by very few people in Amazonia, where she argues that the disappearance of such languages runs the risk of losing insights into the different ways in which people think.
