• The industrial groups included in FORTUNE 500 listings had previously been shown to be valid aggregates for comparing the quality of industrial special library support. Business Week's 600 tabulations were explored as a means of comparing quantity of support and/or superiority of subject classification. Other than showing that firms with libraries spend five times as much on R∧D than those without, the resulting tables yielded disappointing results. Future comparative work should be focused on the FORTUNE 500 groups. An estimate is made that 1% or less of industrial private R&D funds goes to support special library materials and services.
