Margaret Aiken's career in nursing and nursing education dates back to 1937, when she graduated from the Wilmington (Delaware) General Hospital School of Nursing. Since then, she has seen the transformation of nursing from a traditional women's occupation, completely subordinate to the power of the physician, into an increasingly independent profession demanding complex skills and judgment. To meet these new challenges, the American Nurses Association has encouraged a phasing out of the once-standard diploma schools in favor of baccalaureate programs that combine nurse training with a complete liberal arts education. Thus, Mrs. Aiken's retirement as Director of Nursing Education at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1980 coincided with the closing of the diploma school she served as teacher and administrator for 35 years. The following interview, conducted by Cynthia S. Pomerleau, PhD on behalf of the Archives and Special Collections on Women in Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, took place on November 8, 1979.
