  • This chapter describes the various aspects of anti-carbohydrate antibodies with specificity for monosaccharide and oligosaccharide units of antigens. Anti-carbohydrate antibodies are those antibodies synthesized in the circulatory system of vertebrates that have been immunized by antigens containing carbohydrate units. There are microorganisms producing extracellular polysaccharides that may be antigenic. The production of such a polysaccharide for isolation purposes involves the serial growth of the organism on the proper medium to obtain a good yield of organisms. The cells are then inactivated by heat and removed. The isolation of glycoproteins from colon tumor tissue is described in the chapter. The immunogenic carbohydrate in the cell wall of Streptococcus bovis that induces the synthesis of antibodies is a tetraheteropolysaccharide composed of 6-deoxy-L-talose, L-rhamnose, D-galactose, and D-glucuronic acid. L-Rhamnose (6-deoxy-L-mannose) is a constituent carbohydrate of some microbial immunogenic heteropolysaccharides. This deoxy sugar often functions as the immunodeterminant group of the immunogens. It is found that anti-rhamnose antibodies have been isolated from the serum of rabbits immunized with the vaccine of Streptococcus mutans, KI-R.
