• Although infectious complications of flexible bronchoscopy are uncommon, 1 , 2 nosocomial outbreaks related to bronchoscopy have been reported, 3 – 10 and endoscopes, including bronchoscopes, are the medical devices most commonly linked to outbreaks. 11 At Johns Hopkins Hospital, between June 2001 and January 2002, the rate of isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from bronchoalveolar-lavage specimens was three times as high as the usual rate. We investigated the cause of the increase and implemented control measures.
