Exophiala spinifera is reported as a newly recognized agent of chromoblastomycosis. This case demonstrates that infections caused by dematiaceous fungi may be variable and that a single fungus may cause more than one type of infection. Chromoblastomycosis and phaeo-hyphomycosis represent extremes of a continuum of infections.
