Silicic acid dissolved from asbestos is considered responsible for some of the pathological responses associated with asbestos toxicity, and an exchange between silicic acid and phosphoric acid in DNA has been suggested. In view of the involvement of the depurination process in various cellular mechanisms of DNA repair, the influence of silicic acid on in vitro depurination of DNA was studied using calf thymus DNA. Silicic acid decreased the rate of heat depurination of DNA in vitro, suggesting the possibility of its reaction with polynucleotides.
