  • It is quite clear that the RANTES promoter region in the Bon-R-Bab group of monkeys is highly polymorphic and some of the mutations may create a new binding site or modulate the existing factor binding sites. Several common mutations in the Bon-R-Bab group of monkeys, including identical functional mutation (-403A) also observed in humans, suggest that similar selective pressures must have acted on this gene. Our study poses interesting questions regarding the evolution and maintenance of these mutations in certain defined species of moneys. These mutations offer a unique opportunity to address how these mutations effect the promoter activity and its relationship with various immune functions, including the widely varying rates of progression of HIV/SIV among simians.
