Rapid advances in the field of immunology, particularly with respect to the innate immune system, have resulted in several new studies that substantially increase our understanding of how the host responds to schistosomes in the skin and how the parasite has evolved some surprising strategies to circumvent the host's immune response. This article focuses on the balance between proinflammatory and regulatory mechanisms elicited in the skin immediately after parasite exposure, and we suggest that innate immune events in the skin are important guides in determining the nature and magnitude of the ensuing acquired response.
