  • This article explores the situation of the Filipina labor diaspora that exists today throughout Europe, Asia, & North America. An estimated 4 million women from the Philippines serve as low-wage domestic workers in over 130 countries, yet globalization has often denied them full integration & citizenship rights. Many nations have regulations that discourage family reunification & restrict women to domestic work. Some nations, such as the US, Spain, & Canada, offer the possibility of citizenship, but political & social inequalities remain. Although the Philippines & other poor nations must provide low-wage labor to sustain their economies, they lack the resources to protect the exported nationals whom they regard as heroes. The magazine Tinig Filipino provides a forum for migrant Filipina workers. Filipina workers typically form ties to the receiving country, but still regard the Philippines as home & maintain transnational ties. 50 References. J. R. Callahan
