  • Accounts of the virginity examinations to which Turkish women may be subjected preface this examination of the nationalist elite's "modernization project." Regulation of Turkish women into model citizens is studied in the framework of the "woman question," drawing on works by Tezer Taskiran & by Ziya Gokalp of the Young Turks, the Independence War of 1919-22, & the poem "Elif's Oxcart." Feminist challenges to strict imposition of state-defined virtuous behavior are linked to the rise in virginity exams. Peculiarities of the legal system & the significance of women's "purity" are examined for their allowance of invasive procedures. Accounts of incidents in which threats of virginity tests have accompanied rape & bullying by the antiterror police are presented. It is posited that "backward" Turkish laws & practices bear resemblance to personal violence in states presumably more civilized. M. C. Leary
