  • Crohn's disease is a debilitating multisystem disorder whose cause is uncertain. It is characterized by inflammation of the bowel, which usually begins during adolescence or early adulthood and often leads to catabolism. 1 To reduce the inflammation and induce remission, patients with Crohn's disease are treated with immunosuppressive and antiinflammatory drugs that often have severe side effects and that, in some cases, enhance the catabolic process.
