• Acute pharyngitis is one of the most common illnesses for which patients visit primary care physicians. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, upper respiratory tract infections, including acute pharyngitis, are responsible for 200 visits to a physician per 1000 population annually in the United States 1 — a rate more than double that for any other category of infectious disease.
