The article reports on the increasing popularity of referring-physician portals in the U.S. as of 2005. The term portal in the healthcare Internet world has different meanings. The term describes a Web site that groups information and functionality for a particular audience. Its common for hospital Web sites to contain portals for patients, medical staff, and employees, with hospital intranets broadly being employee portals. Portals basically allow hospitals to increase usability of their Web sites. Hospitals have been creating such portals over the past five years. Their sophistication ranges from general information to transaction-based functionality.
