• THE natural weapon of the woman who is left dependent on her own work is the needle. She almost invariably seeks some kind of sewing work. The consequence is that the market is flooded with more or less unskilled needlework, and this over-supply has disastrously brought down both the rates of payment and the quality of work. Ordinary work, work that needs no training beyond the practice of a week or two, will scarcely, at best, do more than secure a subsistence for the worker.
