Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Tuberculosis is the world's leading cause of death due to infectious agents and the problem in recent years has been aggravated by the HIV pandemic and the increasing incidence of drug resistance. Paradoxically, the treatment for this disease is one of the most effective, and cost-effective, of all interventions for life-threatening conditions. Thus, our present day strategies for control of this disease must be seriously questioned. In particular, it must be asked whether these strategies are intrinsically incapable of controlling the disease or whether they could do so if applied efficiently. The alternative is to channel efforts into the development of novel control tools. As the answers are uncertain, and there is no guarantee that research will yield better control measures, both basic and operations research are required.
