For the traditional leftists, the Chinese communist institutional and social practices during the Maoist era serve as the vantage point from which they critique China's current social reality. Even if, upon rigorous scholarship, we come to a consensus that the actual socioeconomic and political results of the Maoist period were, unlike those of the current era, completely unsuccessful and that Mao turned out to be a megalomaniac who was only interested in amassing power, the validity of pre-1978 Chinese communism as a standpoint of critique is not necessarily weakened.
