This contribution to a special journal issue, "Women's Migration," considers prostitution in the contemporary world. In Italy, the panorama of prostitution, in particular in the sector of street prostitution, has undergone considerable change since the early 1990s. Statistical data from a 2004 Report of Caritas/Migrantes, Donne: vittime di tratta e possibilita di recupero (Women: Victims of Sexual Trafficking and the Possibility of Their Recovery) show that the factor that distinguishes the phenomenon of sexual trafficking is the use of force to oblige women to sell their bodies on the street, in apartments or hotels, in massage parlors, etc. Often women, & sometimes men or boys, are taken to tourist locations in Southeast Asia, Africa, & Latin America for the "pleasure" of tourists. Once far away from home, it is unlikely that they will ever be able to return. Adapted from the source document.
