Students who graduated in sociology at Middle Tennessee State U from spring 1974 through fall 1976 were studied to determine how their sociological training affected their employment, their personal lives, & their further education. Completed questionnaires were received from 39% of the 180 who received them. Responding graduates say that sociology has been "helpful" or "very helpful" to them in their daily life & in their employment. Responses are analyzed by degree, sex, & job-related variables. Graduates reply that the basic courses (introduction & problems) have been most helpful. They also say that sociology of the family & social psychology have been significant for their personal lives. Social psychology, social statistics/methodology, & deviancy are mentioned as extremely helpful in their work. Social psychology is mentioned as helpful for further education. Responses are analyzed by degree, sex, & job-related variables. Graduates also say that they should have taken more social work courses, & more courses in the areas of statistics/methodology & social psychology. When the graduates were asked how the faculty could change the department so that a sociology major would be even more relevant for future students, the overwhelming suggestion is that better career preparation be given in the area of job opportunity, salary, & job placement.
