This contribution is an elaboration of the author's earlier work on the culture-bound nature of patterns of occupation of foreign territory. From historical evidence one can infer that the US exhibit a characteristic modus occupandi which can be interpreted as stemming from the British style of occupation, but modified on account of the origin of the American Republic. Emancipating from British rule, the us developed an anti-colonial ethos which implied occupying foreign territories only by way of military interventions mainly to effectuate regime change. This pattern became institutionalized in earlier centuries in Central America & the Caribbean, is discernible also in the case of the American occupation zone in Germany after World War II & in the present Iraq war. Finally, in several salient respects one can detect similarities between the traditional styles of occupation of the Germans & the Americans. Tables, References. Adapted from the source document.
