The pristine laboratory space cannot compare to the messy complexity of humans dwelling in time; why, then, ask an anthropologist to reduce her findings to timeless laws of human nature when the world she operates in is ever changing? Community health practitioners often assume that good health is universally valued above all else, but Kiefer asserts that a better way to understand human behavior is to recognize that people have basic psychological needs - security, love, respect, meaning, and stimulation - and that "health is a means for getting [these] needs met" rather than an end in itself (p. 169, emphasis added).
