  • This introduction notes that we are now at a crossroads with regard to the "gender revolution," with two plausible directions for the future: the optimistic direction would see the remaining, but substantial, gender inequalities falling away & true gender equality achieved; the pessimistic course would be for little further advancement toward equality. Many forces are pushing toward greater gender equality, eg, antidiscrimination legislation, paid parental leave legislation, & on-site child care for working mothers. Working women tend to be in the growing economic sectors (white-collar & service), while more men are in the shrinking sectors (blue-collar & manufacturing), & there is increasing pressure to narrow the gender pay gap. However, the pessimists cite reasons why these trends might not continue to grow. The contributions to this edited collection, written by eminent scholars in the field of gender inequality, consider both the optimistic & the pessimistic possibilities for the future.
