This rebuttal to Gabriele Ballarino's (2005) critical review of Barbera's Meccanismi sociali. Elementi di sociologia analitica ([Social Mechanisms. Elements of Analytic Sociology] Bologna: Il Mulino, 2004) addresses several objections & claims made in the former's critique: (1) there is no direct relationship between accounts in terms of causal mechanisms, analytic sociology, & methodological individualism, (2) analytic sociology should not be identified with the Colombia School, (3) accounts in terms of micro-based social events & mechanisms are motivated by ideology rather than science, (4) micro-based accounts privilege the role of social actors in decision-making processes & marginalize the constraints of social structures, (5) micro-based sociological analysis is inspired by neoclassical economy, & (6) without its micro-based & ideological elements, analytic sociology is synonymous with scientific sociology.
