  • In this review of two works by French philosopher Pierre Manent, A World beyond Politics? A Defense of the Nation State &La raison de nations: Reflections sur la democratic en Europe, the reviewer distinguishes Manent's conjoining & balancing of French, political, & philosopher in his love of human liberty common sense of the adventure of politics, & practice of philosophical acuity & equanimity. Discussion of previous works identifies three themes of liberalism in a capacious European sense, the distinctive political form of liberalism & modern democracy, & the reality of man's political nature & humanities political condition. Manent's judgment of the contemporary European scene identifies the elevation & empowerment of the distinctive figure of the three individual, the detachment of the idea of democracy from a territory where people, the substitution of governance from government resulting in the delegitimization of human agency. The parallels to Montesquieu & Toqueville are identified in this increasing ascendancy of the individual, and are discussed in terms of globalization & the European nation-state. References. J.
