Examines the relationship between adolescent smoking under stress, psychological distress, & social support, drawing on 1991 questionnaire data from 1,168 high school sophomores & junior high school students in SC. White students were more likely to engage in stress-related smoking than were black students, as were adolescents with higher psychological distress & lower social support scores. It is concluded that adolescent smoking prevention & cessation programs should consider incorporating behavioral strategies aimed at coping with psychological distress & strengthening social support. 3 Tables, 54 References.
