  • Explores the role of gender & family systems in fertility transition & considers the implications for future fertility trends. How prevailing family & gender systems in pre-transitional settings impact a population's inclination to undergo a fertility transition is examined, focusing on the number of surviving children that family systems can accommodate or find valuable, the onset & pace of mortality decline, & the availability & costs of postnatal forms of family size control. Attention is then given to how changes in traditional family & gender systems influence the intermediate variables of demand for children, supply of children, & costs of using fertility limitation that then determine whether or when a fertility transition occurs & the speed with which it progresses. The relationship between family & gender systems to post-transitional changes or variations in fertility is addressed in closing. References. D. Edelman
