In his writing, analogous sounds link a multitude of heterogeneous and largely incommensurable meanings, languages, and contexts in the space of a single word reduced to a pure signifier, to an empty universal form, or to what Derrida calls, following Benjamin, "pure language." Derrida and the later Wittgenstein (at least as philosophers have begun to read him in the wake of deconstruction) 9 both displace the fixed laws, simple identities, and a priori truths of traditional philosophy and analytic logic by philosophies of language which display "the flexibility, indeterminacy and open-endedness of meaning, the creativity of language use," 10 and the way "meaning moves."
