• Uses their own published writings & letters to illustrate the argument between Georg Simmel & young U of Heidelberg docent Friedrich Gundolf concerning German efforts to present its WWI rationale to neutral countries, beginning with Gundolf's "Tat und Wort im Krieg" ([Deed and Word in the War] Frankfurter Zeitung, 1914, 16 Oct). Issues of truth & propaganda are raised. Also discussed are Simmel's relationships with non-German European intellectuals, the relationship between Simmel & Stefan George, & attacks on Simmel by Karl Wolfskehls.
