Previous hypotheses on the determinate nature of potential for conflict between national-ethnic majorities & minorities have been borne out: ie, majority group members are less likely to have pugnacious attitudes toward minorities, while in minorities, the opposite is true. However, majority members are likely to be intolerant of minorities, as is evident in the ethnic tension involving Hungarian minorities in Transylvania (Romania) & southern Slovakia. In the former, they are seen as scapegoats for economic setbacks, while in the latter, they are denied linguistic rights; the result is that these communities feel themselves to be under threat. It is observed that sociodemographic variables have little effect on ethnic tension. 3 Tables, 4 Figures, 9 References. Adapted from the source document.
