In France, cooperation between religious & public authorities at local & national levels has resulted in the Cathedral of the Resurrection epitomizing a break with a conception of modernity that, to reconcile faith & progress, favors change over continuity & tends to relegate the sacred to an obsolete & past era. The cathedral represents the triumph of tradition over modernity, addressing failures of modernizing urban developments & an obvious expression of a return to a greater religious visibility. The apparent consensus that surrounded the project should not mask the contradictory logics of recollection that presided over the reactualization of the cathedral. Seen by the church as a place of transmission of a normative memory controlled & regulated by the Catholic institution, the cathedral is regarded by urban developers & the architect as the locus of an anonymous transcendence with which everybody may identify regardless of their relationship with Catholicism. Here, these different logics & the difficulty encountered by the Catholic Church in making this edifice truly its own are explored. Highlighted is the ambivalence of an institution torn between a return to a clear Catholic identity & a maximal opening that makes it look like a religious supermarket.
