Institutional analyses in the social sciences, particularly in economics & sociology, have regained currency in the past 2 decades. An overview of current approaches to this neo-institutionalism is provided; the antiutilitarian nature of this theory & its analysis of homo oeconomicus is stressed, as is the role that social institutions play in economic life. A brief introduction to the history of institutionalism in classic economic thought is included; the regulative dimension in institutions in rational choice theory & in contemporary institutional economics is also discussed. The roots of modern institutionalism are reviewed, in particular the theories of Thorstein Veblen (eg, 1909), J. Commons (eg, 1924), & Karl Polanyi (eg, 1974). Adapted from the source document.
