  • Max Weber's political writings focused on several dimensions, eg, structures of the modern political sphere; how elements of liberalism & democracy were gradually enforced in political life; & how a new configuration of spiritual, economic, & political spheres crystallized. In a manner analogous to the way in which a new moral evaluation of work became objectivized in the capitalist economic system, a new understanding emerged in man's relationship to himself through the creation of political institutions. The values of individuality & equality before God were implemented on the legal & political levels, facilitating the synthesis of liberalism with democracy. The sovereignty of individual rights became paramount, & the only source for legitimacy became the consent of the majority. Aside from Weber's theoretical reflections on modernism, he maintained a practical interest in the German political situation at the turn of the century, where the issue of political modernization was important in the country's ability to survive the great contest of nations. He showed the constitution of modern politics & the problems of modernization to be manifestations of rationalization, the fundamental formative process of modern society. 6 References.
