  • Feminists recognize that the concept of the human body is predetermined in discussions on sexuality. The female body is perceived in terms of a set of violations that are constructs for a problematic gender matrix with discursive practices, assisted by women's fashion. As such, women's bodies have been shaped by various socioregulatory ideals. Fashion is the combination of clothing & body into an acceptable contemporary look that is regulated rather than chic. Analysis of women's fashion changes in Hong Kong during the 1960s shows that the inroads made by Western influences on the predominantly Chinese population led to conflicts among residents searching for cultural identity. Many women wore straight, shapeless garments & miniskirts, although body language & behavior expressed modesty. In this light, a research project is outlined, intended to explore how Hong Kong's unique political & social situation has established & regulated the domain of women's bodies through the analysis of fashion photos, slides, & Cantonese films.
