This article enquires what patronage, dilettantism and professionalization implied for women writers in early nineteenth-century Russia. Dilletantism was a moral desideratum and patronage was the method which turned natural talent into literary skill and then provided income. Most women writers did not depend on writing for income. However, Bunina did so; combining patronage with professionalism, she dedicated works to the imperial family and met the need for patriotic verse, and wrote for the public - for captive audiences in educational institutions, like-minded writers, and probably, increasing numbers of women readers. She was one of the first Russian writers to live by the pen.
