Analyzes the Vereinigung demokratischer Juristen (VDJ), the jurists' association of the former East Germany, in relation to classic Western models of professionalization & finds it only partially congruent with such models. Analysis is based in part on examination of VDJ publications, which indicate that the VDJ's organization traits were shaped by the distinctive role of law in the former East Germany. This role was the pursuit of socialist goals, eg, nationalization. The VDJ did not function as a Western-style interest group pursuing goals for its members. It had very little control, eg, over member incomes; nor was the organization shaped by market forces such as consumer demand, as evidenced by its static size. Professional autonomy was instead a product of the compact between lawyers & the state regarding law's sociopolitical role. 16 References. Adapted from the source document.
