Outlines the life of Irving Kenneth Zola, Mortimer Gryzmish Professor of Human Relations at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Acknowledges that, with his death, the sociology of health and illness lost one of its most accomplished practitioners and the disability rights movement one of its most insistent voices. Zola wrote in 1972 that medicine was becoming a major institution of social control, nudging aside, if not incorporating, the more traditional institutions of religion and law. Discusses this viewpoint. (Original abstract-amended)
