Comments on Anthony Giddens's Consequences of Modernity (see IRPS No. 53/96c01280), which was recently translated into German, using the metaphor of the Chinese box to place Giddens in a line that extends back through Jacques Derrida to the intellectual ghosts & spectres that haunted Derrida's work. This illuminates Giddens's treatment of reflexivity & recursiveness, his version of structuration theory, & the implications of his book for organizational theory. It is concluded that Giddens views organization as reflexive structuration; ie, reflexivity is institutionalized in modern organizations. Ramifications for neoinstitutional organizational research are considered. 51 References. E. Blackwell
