- Social movements as well as other political actors affect the process of political change, beyond the sheer emergence of mass protest and disorder. Seeks to place these problems in a common frame, and examine the organization of state and societal actors (elite and insurgent) in the context of popular mobilization and political institution-building. Focuses on a historical case study of class formation, collective action, and local state-making in the city of Oakland from the turn of the century to the 1946 General Strike.
