Gender-related expectations about love & relationships were analyzed among a representative random sample of Austrians (N = 1,180), subjecting scale data to a factor analysis to extract three dimensions of relationships: independence, role orientation, & romantic love. Role orientation did not differ between genders, although there were differences by age & education. Differences were found with regard to independence, which men supported, leading to conflict. No gender differences were found in the dimension of romantic love. Support was found for a personalization of the conjugal relationship along with a devaluing of traditional gender roles, primarily due to the new career roles of women.
