In the history of Slovak sociological thought, a special place of prominence is occupied by sociography as developed by various schools of thought in the 1920s. With the appointment of Anton Stefanek as professor of applied sociology at Comenius U in Bratislava, sociology was able to build on the foundation laid by the sociographers. His key work, Zaklady sociografie Slovenska ([Foundations of Slovak Sociography] 1945), investigated the changes occurring in Slovak society during the late nineteenth & early twentieth centuries & was exemplary of his sociological theory & methodology. The book's explicit goal was nothing less than to create the scientific basis for a systematic sociological study of Slovak society; it was the first comprehensive work by a Slovak professor of sociology. Additional works by Stefanek focused on peasant society, statistics, & the methodology of applied sociology. 31 References. M. Meeks
