The historical evolution of the age breaks between infancy, adolescence, & youth are traced from Aristotle's delineation of "youth" as the period of ages 7-40. Changing categorizations & conceptualizations of youth have had implications for education & pedagogy. When excluded from the category of adulthood by adults, because of psychological theories in which certain psychological attributes are ascribed to certain age groups, youth formed its own subculture, which functions to reproduce the dominant classes through the educational system.
