  • The impact of Reaganomics on women, workers, & persons of color is explored through an examination of structures in the political economy. Both the rise & the fall of the welfare state are connected to the maintenance of corporations, political legitimacy, patriarchal relationships, & racial hierarchies. The fall of the 1980s was necessary because the welfare state had become too competitive with capital accumulation & too supportive of empowerment. Reaganomics played a role in this fall by instigating a total shift in public policy, which came with a high human toll. In addition to inflicting individual suffering, the Reagan administration's policies weakened popular movements & democratic structures, resulting in distrust & violence between groups. The victims -- women, labor, & the poor -- are often blamed, but a new realization of the problems of division & the efforts of social activists offer some hope. 50 References.
