Discusses the fate of German Jewish women who emigrated to the US, 1933-1943. From the beginning of the Third Reich, the Jewish population in Germany was discriminated against economically, politically, & socially. Between 1933 & 1939, gender relations in Jewish families underwent important changes: when the men lost their jobs, many middle-class Jewish women were forced to work outside the home for social agencies & businesses, & as servants. Their responsibilities within the families grew, as did their burdens. For both Jewish men & women, gender influenced their desire to emigrate or to stay in Germany, as did this change in gender roles. Women generally found jobs in the US first. Although poorly paid, their work as maids, private nurses, & factory workers enabled the German Jewish immigrants to reach middle-class status within a relatively short period. 2 Photographs. AA
