The dramatic increase in street robberies & their increasingly violent character have become a cause for concern in the Netherlands. Analysis of statistical data & police reports reveal that perpetrators are often young & belong to ethnic minorities. This has enhanced public fear of certain groups. However, further analyses of type of theft, modus operandi, & type of weapon show that the actual risks of victimization are smaller than perceived. Victimization in street robbery depends on sex, age, mobility, & neighborhood. A more sophisticated risk analysis is clearly needed to provide the public with realistic information about street robbery & selective patterns of victimization. 1 Figure, 27 References.
