• A critical appraisal of the work of Karl Marx reveals a contradiction between his emancipatory interests & his critical faculty: from 1843 to 1850, his revolutionary expectations were immediate; during 1850-1860, they were more distant; & the period 1860-1963 was marked by resignation. Correspondingly, Marx moved from an activist approach to practice through an interpretation of political economy based on a theory of systems, to an evolutionary modification of the theory itself.
