A historical & philosophical comparison of freedom as established by the 1689 English Bill of Rights, the 1776 US Declaration of Rights, & the 1789 French Declaration of the Rights of Man. It is argued that these seminal bills, which are the first written representations of human rights, carry with them fundamentally different historically & socially formed notions of the relationship between man & state. Drawing on the theories of Jean-Jacques Rousseau & John Locke, it is suggested that the French bill of rights is organized around consensus, thus limiting individual freedoms; in contrast, it is suggested that English & US emphasis on trust highlights the autonomy of individuals.
