THE PURPOSE OF JOHN GAFFNEY'S BOOK IS TO SHOW HOW PUBLIC DISCOURSE OF COMMUNIST AND SOCIALIST PARTIES IN FRANCE HAVE BEEN MEANS FOR ADAPTATION TO THE FIFTH REPUBLIC, OR MORE PRECISELY TO A REGIME CHARACTERIZED BY PRESIDENTIAL DOMINANCE SINCE 1962. THIS ADAPTATION TO PERSONALISM, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO RUN AND WIN AT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, HAS SOME EFFECTS WITHIN THE PARTIES THEMSELVES AS FAR AS THE PARTY LEADER BECOMES A PERMANENT RALLY LEADER. THE ANALYSIS OF TEXTS FROM 1979 AND 1980 FOR THE COMMUNIST PARTY, AND FROM 1974, 1979 AND 1984 FOR THE SOCIALIST ONE, TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE FORMATIVE CONDITIONS OF EACH DISCOURSE; BUT THE CORE OF THE BOOK IS DEVOTED TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FORM AND STRUCTURE (NARRATIVE QUALITY) AND THE CONTENTS OF THE TEXTS THEMSELVES.
